Troubleshooting Problems With Family

2 Things That Are Commonly Unique To Women During A Divorce

Everyone knows that going through a divorce is hard. But what many people don't realize is that the challenges are different for men and women in most cases. There will be certain things that will be frustrating to women that may not be as much of a problem for men. Here are some things that women commonly go through during a divorce.

1. Financial Trouble

If your spouse was the primary breadwinner in your marriage, it is likely that you will experience some sort of financial troubles when you go through a divorce. This is especially the case if you were a stay-at-home parent and haven't been a part of the workforce for some time. You may feel the need to find employment, but before you can find a decent job, you may have to go back to school or get more training. This can cause many women to feel a major financial strain. In some rare cases, the other spouse won't pay the alimony and child support that they owe. This can cause the woman to experience even more financial strain. In this case, you will have to go back to court to get their wages garnished or to have a judge make them pay their alimony and/or child support.

2. The Burden and Joy of Physical Custody

In most cases, both parents share legal custody of the children. This means that they both make legal decisions about their children and have a dual claim to the child, however one parent is likely to get physical custody of the child, meaning that they have the children more than the other. In the majority of cases, the woman gets physical custody. This can bring a lot of joy because the mother may feel like that is the best place for her children to be, but it can also be a burden because now you have children in your home without another partner to help. Going out, even going to work, can bring new challenges. Now you need to pay for daycare, which you may not be able to afford, you will have little to no time to your yourself, and no one to share the load.

Make sure that if you are going through this challenge that you reach out to family and friends for support. There may be some that are able to help with the children as provide emotional support.

As you can see these are some challenges that are common to women during a divorce. To learn more about divorce, contact a divorce mediator like The New York Center for Divorce & Family Mediation
